Here Are 3 Professions You Can Try Before Stepping Into Entrepreneurship

Successful entrepreneurs have certain skills which help them out in their business. Of course, they have to develop these skills somewhere, which is where their previous jobs come into play. Even if one would like to start a business right after graduation, a proper job is a good option at first. This is not just for the stable paycheck, but the experience and talent they hone when working there.

In fact, many entrepreneurs may have had several jobs before they start on their own venture. Below are a few of the best career paths that could help out those who want to be their own boss in the future:

1. Sales Manager

For recent graduates, this job offers a decent salary as well as the potential to develop and enterprising entrepreneurs. Within the job market, it also has a large number of opening every year, thus making it easy to get a position.

The main skill one learns here is handling sales, which is a must-have for a new entrepreneur. When the individual finds himself ready to break away and start up his own company, he would need to focus on sales. Without this area, no business can flourish.

A sales position would develop thought-processing, social, and management skills. The last kind is probably the most valuable of all. Every graduate needs to know how to handle people, time, and

whatever resources they have. A certain amount of social skills is also needed for entrepreneurs to attract investors and customers alike.

2. Retail

Retail is not a glamorous job, nor one that many particularly enjoy. It involves dealing with difficult customers, often for a low wage and long, grueling hours. However, the skills developed in a retail job can just make up for all the downsides to such a position.

For example, when you help out customers in any area, you find out what people want. More importantly, you get trained in finding out how to let them know what they want when they’re confused. This would happen when you have a conversation with the customer, which you can then use as an entrepreneur. Who knows, one may even develop a product to target customers from their previous job.

Even if one has a bad experience with people, it would probably help them in developing a thick skin. This is something every entrepreneur must have since there are always critics. Even if a business is going well, there might be online trolls or nightmarish customers to bring you down. If one is already used to this nastiness, they can let it slide or know how to deal with it due to their experience in retail

3. Cook/Chef

Even if one isn’t particularly interested in making food for a living, they might want to consider it for training purposes. For a time, the high-pressure and fast-paced environment of a restaurant kitchen can be a crash course for a future entrepreneur.

Cooks and chefs may enjoy the art of their cooking, but entrepreneurs want the decision-making skills. Plus, a lot can go wrong in a kitchen. Learning how to deal with problems quickly and not to panic are two very important skills one can learn as a cook.

Customers are demanding, time is short, and not everyone is at their most graceful point. If one can make it as a cook for a while, they would be grateful for having handled such situations beforehand.

Wrap-Up

Management positions are good for teaching budding entrepreneur the ins and outs of the business. However, one should not underestimate the usefulness of a basic job either. Those who want to start their own business should hence consider taking up several jobs prior to starting up. They could also start a business on the side while holding down a day job as a safety net.

Do You Want a Job in Space?

Space Workers Required.

Growing up in the 1980’s watching science fiction TV series, it wasn’t hard to imagine a future where we would all be working and living in outer space. As an adult, I realized that these fantasies were make-believe or are they?

With recent technological advancements, these childhood dreams could in actual fact become a reality. The UK government alone has predicted over 100,000  space jobs in the next 5-10 years.

Both businesses and governments can see the potential in space, which has been proven through funding being allocated to space innovators and scientists.  If space is the final frontier, the question you need to ask yourself is what space positions could you be employed in?

Space Miners

Recently the NASA-funded lunar research project has discovered evidence of water locked in mineral grains on the moon, which scientists believe originates from deep within the moon’s interior. Our knowledge of the make up of planets is increasing as research into projects such as magnetic water provides clues and an new understanding of how planets were formed.

Planetary geologists could play a vital role in the future discoveries of minerals and ores that we could use back on earth. With the earth’s natural supply of coal and oil dwindling, our next step maybe to mine and drill for these resources on orbiting planets.

It’s not just fueling resources on planets that we could mine. There is a  potential to find gold, starting of a new space gold rush. Gold and silver are formed through fusion inside of a star. When the earth was being created after the big bang, other stars exploded scattering heavy metals throughout the universe.

If gold and silver were created in the earth’s core, it would all be melted due to the intense heat, which means after the earth solidified, gold and silver hit the earth in the form of a large asteroid shower.

And if these asteroids hit the earth they may have hit other nearby planets too. Future generations could have the age-old job of gold mining or “forty-niners” as they were originally called. The future gold rush won’t see people panning for gold  in streams; it will be a more high tech operation using drilling and engineering technology.

Space Watchers

We have seen an increase in the number of satellites orbiting the earth.  These satellites are the eyes of the earth, saving employers both time and money. As an example, a construction project manager no-longer needs to leave their office to view how the project is progressing.

Instead, they can log into a  website that program’s the satellite, sending live images of how the project progresses.

The Google team have seen the potential of space, and recently launched its  Lunar X-PRIZE, where they want a private company to launch a rocket, safely land it on the surface of the Moon, make it travel for 500 meters above, below, or on the Lunar surface, and finally to send back two “Moon-casts” to Earth.

The prize is worth $40 Million, which is an example of the type of investment companies are committed to investing in the space sector.

One future space job will be asteroids watching. We know that asteroids killed of the dinosaurs and we don’t want the same thing to happen to the human race. NASA recently announced that it will launch a survey telescope to search for near-earth asteroids. These early warning systems may save thousands of lives in the event of asteroids hitting the earth. In the USA president Obama has even outlined plans that could see astronauts land on an asteroid.

This paranoia is a real threat, last year over 1000 people were injured in  Russia when a 40-ton meteor traveling at 33,000 mph explodes over a terrified town.

Space Holidays

Space could be the next destination for the holidaymaker. Virgin and Richard  Branson are already ahead of the game with this new sector, recently launching the world’s first spaceline – The Virgin Galactic.

This groundbreaking opportunity to holiday in space as one of the first-ever non-professional astronauts is a dream that can now be fulfilled. “The deal with  Mojave Aerospace Ventures is just the start of what we believe will be a new era  in the history of mankind, one day making the affordable exploration of space by  human beings a real possibility.” Richard Branson.

This could be just the start. We could soon be holidaying on Virgin space stations or booking accommodation on planets using advanced technologies to  provide air and water.

Dennis Tito the world’s first space tourist, recently launched a project to send a married couple into space to circulate the planet Mars, a trip lasting  500 days.

The trip costing over a £1 Billion pounds may not be a trip future  tourist could afford but the investment again shows the commitment business  leaders are having when it comes to space holidays

Future Space Jobs

In the innovation and testing stage of any new technologies and job sectors,  means we cannot accurately predict the future of these potential space jobs. All we know is that companies like Google, Virgin and Dennis Tito are all investing in space, which means they can see the potential space can offer. As with inventions like the internet and mobile phones, some skeptics may believe this is a fad, but the possibilities could be endless changing the jobs we will be employed in, the way we live,… or even where we live.

10 Crazy Jobs From History

Do you ever wake up with the Monday Morning Blues? Moaning about how bad your job is?

Well after reading the 10 crazy jobs from history you will realise how lucky you are to be in employed in your current position.

The Mud Lark

mud lark

The Victorian mud lurk had one hell off a job, these mainly young children worked on the cold banks of the Thames collecting scrap metal and coal to re-sell. Struggling through deep sucking mud, these children on the verge of poverty worked in all weathers, the sun, rain, wind and snow.

The themes was full of floating debris, the banks filled with litter from the hundreds of ships that sailed through.

Many ships would accidentally lose goods and coal over the side, once washed up on the muddy banks these poor mud larks were tasked with collecting as much as they could before selling it to poorly housed Londoners.

This job worsens. Back in Victorian Britain, with a populated capital, the only system we had for removing sewage was to poor it into the river, to be taken by the tide out to sea. Many young boys died due to infected cuts while collecting litter to sell.

Whipping Boy

whipping boy

In the 15th century, one way educators instilled discipline and to increase learning was to whip their students, often with a sturdy cane, whenever they fell behind with their studies or for naughty deeds.

This form of punishment went on for many years. Back in the 15th century a problem arose to the teachers of royal families.

When a prince was naughty or fell behind in their studies, they couldn’t cane them or they might receive their own punishments in the form of a beheading.

To get around this conundrum, the princes would employ a whipping boy – a boy who would be whipped as punishment for the prince when he was naughty or when he fell behind with his studies.

Knocker Upper

knocker upper

Back in time, workers had to be up and ready for work by sunrise, the idea being that the business owners wanted to get as much work (and production) out of the workers as possible.

After a hard week at work, tiredness would take over and while waiting for the invention of the alarm clock, workers had no choice but to employ a Knocker Upper, a man or women who would come round each morning before sunrise, and either bang on your bedroom window with a long pole or use a pea shooter to fire little pebbles at your window.

Potato Chip Inspector

potao chip inspector

In more recent times, groups of women would stand for over 8 hours on a production line at a crisp factor watching millions of shaped potato chips pass by.

These keen eyed women were on the look out for over-cooked potato chips, that they later disposed of. Day in and day out the routine of the job was the same, standing, watching, waiting until finally….. a burnt crisp caught their eye, a little bit of excitment for the day.

Dog Food Taster

dog food taster

Apparently this tasty position is still available…..any takers? Dog food is big business, with some owners only wanting the best for man’s best friend. The dog food taster each day takes random samples of tinned dog food from the production line to taste the quality  of the product. They have a scoring system and if a tin of dog food doesn’t meet their standard then production stops.

The Poo Collector

horse poo

The “Pure” collector as the official job title goes meaning Poo collector; The pure collector is tasked with finding and collecting animal faeces off the road and selling it to the leather workers or tanners as they were known.

Tanners  would dip hides into a smelly lime solution and soak them with the animal faeces that the pure collectors had amounted over the course of the day.

Many of the Tanners lived on the periphery of society as their stench left from their job was unbearable to the people of the town.

Some pure collectors were lucky enough to have a shovel and cart, others often much poorer pure collects used their hands and large sacks.

Crime Scene Cleaner

crime scene cleaner

If squeamish do not apply- this job can be mentally disturbing, cleaning up after crime scenes; blood, loose remains and decomposing bodies.

Crime scene cleaners are not your usual minimum waged cleaners with a bucket and a mop. These highly trained cleaners work closely with the police to turn a crime scene back into its original and teacupful state.

Fuller

tanner

A Fuller has a similar role to that of the Tanner (mentioned above), a fuller was a key part in the massive UK hat industry. With everyone wearing hats, this industry was big business.

The process includes dipping wool (which was often used in hat making)  into urine to get rid of the grease (Lanolin) that would stop the wool from falling apart, helping the hat keep its shape.

The Fuller will be elbow deep in wee for over 8 hours a day, taking the smell of urine home with them.

Snake Milker

snake venom

This highly dangerous job involves collecting venom from snakes to make anti-venom. Collecting snake venom is no new thing, tribes throughout the world would use snake venom to add position to their arrows to bring down big game.

In more recent times some dare devils live on the extreme and enjoy the sport of drinking this highly dangerous venom. Part of this role can include hunting, breeding and caring for a range of the worlds deadliest snakes.

Navy (Georgian Times)

georgian sailor

We owe a lot to our Navy, but to be in the Navy in Georgian times was one of the worst jobs in history.

Due to a lack of volunteers, civilians may have found themselves waking up one morning travelling out to sea with the Navy after being banged on the head and smuggled aboard the night before – often while they were drunk. This was the Navy’s press gang in full operation, operating around the ports of Britain.

To keep discipline, the Navy would hand out server punishment for any slight disobedience, including the whiping by a “cat and 9 tails” a long leather whip with nine separate ends.

The jobs in the Navy were very daunting from a Top Man who was tasked  to climb the rigging to the top sales know as sky scrapers, in stormy weather using no safety equipment, many of whom fell to their deaths in stormy seas.

The Monkey Boys (often very young children) would carry bags of gun powder to the cannons during battle, with little spark and they would have been blown sky high. and of course the notorious navy battles, where many sailors would die during battle, through cannons, splinters, gun fire, drowning and during on-board ‘life saving’ surgery.

Improve Your Performance Review

Most organisations complete regular performance reviews with their employees.

The performance review is designed to boost the employee’s motivation by highlighting their strengths while at the same time putting in a plan of action to help the employee to overcome any working barriers.

In this instance, the performance review should be a positive experience, but many employees see the performance review as a negative experience.

This is often because managers are not trained in coaching employees, and a performance review is in essence a coaching session.

3 steps to perform better in the performance review

1. Preparation for Performance

Most employees see the performance review as a dreaded task, where the employer will pick out the employee’s weaknesses, which can only result in the employee nervously answering the questions sometimes lying about their performance to get a more positive review.

In a team meeting explain what will happen in the performance review, how you will look at the employee’s strengths and skills, that the employee will be given a chance to discuss what would make them happier and motivated in work, explain that the employee will have a chance to discuss what training they require and where they want to progress to in the business long term.

In short, you need your staff to see the review as a positive session, so many businesses will use the performance review as a tool for redundancy criteria or as a tool that can affect the employees bonus – this can only result in an unrealistic session, the key to a performance review is honesty, the employee should be able to say what they like without it affecting their future at the company, this way the employer will end with a stronger workforce

2. Solution Focus

Many managers are trained to coach their employees by asking questions such as “why did that go wrong?” negative questions can only end with the employee feeling accused, worthless and unmotivated. Using solution focus questions such as “what would you do differently next time to get a better result?” allows the employee to feel valued, confident and open.

This will lead to the employees having an action plan to follow increasing their work output, while feeling positive and motivated.

3. Venue

In the workplace, rooms are often unconsciously allocated a feeling. “The dreaded bosses office where people go when they’re in trouble” the performance review should be delivered in a neutral room, where the “power chair” (the bosses chair) has gone.

This allows for a more relaxed air, and it is important that phones are turned off and a “do not disturb” sign is placed on the door – this rule sounds obvious but is rarely followed
