7 Tips to Help You a Write a Curriculum Vitae

7 Tips to Help You a Write a Curriculum Vitae

With 300 people applying for every advertised job you already understand why having a targeted CV is so important. This article is designed to help you to understand what you need to add to your CV to secure more job interviews.

Stylist CV

With employers spend around 30 seconds initially “skimming” through your CV, the style of your CV is key; Keep your CV to 1 or 2 pages, use Headings and Breakers to split up the CV text, making it easier for the employer to read.

What to put on a CV

Contact Details

You don’t need to record the word “curriculum vitae” on the CV as employers can tell from the content that your document is a CV. Also delete nationality, DOB and marital status. Record your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address.

Personal Profile

The key section on your CV is the personal profile, the personal profile is a short paragraph around 4-5 lines recording all your key skills and qualities that are needed for the job you are applying for. You can use the profile section to target your skills to essential criteria on the job specification. Only record positive statements and key words on the profile.

Employment History

Keep the employment history brief, there is no need to record an overview of the company as the employer is interested in you and your skills. Record the company name and years worked, add your job title and 4-6 bullet points recording the duties relevant to the new position you are applying for.

Qualifications.

Record all your employment history including higher education and in-house training. Add the education establishment, years attended and qualification achieved.

Hobbies.

This section should be kept short and is only required to give an overview of your character.

References.

Record “references available on Request” As most employers will only ask for your referees details once you have been offered a position.

CV Hints and Tips

On average employers can receive between 200-300 CVs for every advertised job – That’s a lot of competition, so  you need to ensure your CV sticks out above the rest.

Due to the large amount of CVs employers receive, they tend to spend around 30 seconds “skimming” through your CV, quickly making a decision to put your CV in the successful applicants or none successful applicants pile.

If your CV has made it to the successful pile the employer will then re-read each CV in more detail deciding which applicants (5 candidates per position on average) to interview.

The following tips and hints will give you the upper hand on other candidates, some of the tips may seem obvious, but you would be amazed about the amount of job searchers who don’t gain interviews due to small errors:

Always send a covering letter-this will make your CV look more professional:

  • Keep the covering letter on one page
  • Highlight the key skills needed for the job you are applying for
  • Add information about the company you are applying to, as this will individualise your application
  • Ensure your CV looks neat and tidy; no creased corners or coffee stains

Tailor your CV to every job you apply for:

  • Read the job specification and add/change your personal profile and job duties to match those of the position you are applying for
  • Ensure the essential skills, qualities, experiences and qualifications needed for the job role are added to your CV
  • Delete any information from your CV that is not relevant to the job you are applying for
  • If you are applying for several different job roles, use a tailored CV for each job role

Once you are employed, keep your CV up to date, as this will save time in the long term:

    • Change your contact details if you move address or gain a new phone number/e-mail address
    • Add any new training and qualifications that you gain
    • Record any achievements in your current position as you achieve them

Speculative Application

You don’t have to wait for jobs to be advertised, speculative applications are often a quick and easy way to apply for work, and many people don’t use this technique to apply for work.

Go on www.yell.com to find specific companies to which you would like to apply. Once you have the company address send out your CV and a Speculative Covering Letter (see attached Covering Letter PDF) research has shown there is a 40-45% success rate in doing this. My own personal experience has shown that there is a 30% success rate – even if this figure was 20% I would recommend Speculative applications as they require minimal effort, little time and I can personally vouch for their success as I have gained several jobs through this method.

One Line to Secure a Job Interview

With so many people being made redundant and an increase in small company closers, you can see why the demand for every job vacancy has arisen.

To beat the competition, you only need One Opening Line! If you knew which one sentence would secure you a job interview, would you add it to your application?

As we all know, employers quickly skim through your CV and Covering Letter, what they do all read is your opening line, it makes sense for this opening line to be the best sentence on your CV or Covering Letter.

Before writing your opening line, you first need to know what essential skills, qualities and experiences the employer requires, all you have to do is show you have these in your opening line.

Ask yourself, what is the one thing the employer would want me to achieve? This could save outgoing cost, increase productivity, make a profit, moving people forward with their life, it doesn’t matter what the employer requires of you, it’s about how you can prove you will achieve this in just one line.

Now you know what the employer requires, the type of person they are looking for, to add value to your opening line you need to evidence that you can achieve what you say you can achieve, you can do this by relating it to your own experiences.

This simple technique is how our CV Writing Service achieves maximum success with our customer CV’s

Example Opening Lines:

  • “Successfully tripled company profits within a 12 month period by….”
  • “My leadership skills and innovation quickly turned around a company producing a high loss into a profitable company by….”
  • “Saved X company over 1 million pounds, by creating a new system to take raw materials to production to the sale of goods bypassing expensive third parties”
  • “Increased productivity and reduced sickness which lead to an increase in profits by 35% year on year”
  • “Experienced in successfully managing multimillion pound projects…”
  • “With over 10 years experience as a keynote speaker, delivering inspiring talks to groups of over 500 delegates…”
  • “My ability to problem solve along with my keen eye for detail, allows me to quickly find areas of high cost; in every company I have worked for this skill has helped me to decrease overhead payments leading to higher profits”

Does Your CV Secure You Job Interviews?

As a Careers Advisor Manager in a previous role, I have received and read hundreds of good and bad CV’s. Why is it that some CVs secure job interview while others secure a quick trip to the garbage bin?

This article is not about what you need to add to a CV, but how to make your CV stand out.

Attention Grabbing

This is common, but I will say it again, over 300 people can apply for every advertised job, even when the number of applicants is reduced to 200 or 100 hundred, employers will not read every CV in detail – Why? Because it takes up to much time, and “Time is Money”

The design of your CV needs to stand out and grab the employer’s attention. You will agree, it is easy to make a CV stand out, by using a hundred different colours and fonts. You will also agree, these over creative CVs will not secure you any job interviews. Many of you will agree and know that a CV needs to visually look good and be able to catch the employer’s eye.

Opening Line

Once you have a good CV design, you next need to think about the CV content. Employers will often look for reasons to “like” or “not like” your CV. To have your CV added to the “like” pile, add an attention grabbing opening line, as an example “Doubled profits in the first year of joining a declining company by…..add lots of reasons” For a sales position, you will agree this line will increase your chances of your CV being added to the “like” pile.

Avoid Common Phrases

We have already discussed this in previous articles, job hunters who continue to use common phrases, with the mis-belief, that if it works for others it will work for me, fail to secure job interviews. The secret is, these common words, worked in the 80’s not the 00’s. The common phrases used, do not secure job interview, you need to evidence your skills and qualities; Why are you a great communicator? How can you meet targets?

Is a CV a Sales tool?

Yes, the CV is a sale tool. Your CV is in most cases the first impression the employer makes of you, your CV needs to say “out of the 300 applicants you will want to interview me” as with all sale strategies, you need to sell your strengths, your positives and what it is you have that others don’t?

The Employers Perceptive

One of the biggest mistakes made by other CV writers, is they don’t look at the CV from the employers perceptive. Read the job advert, research the website and investigate the employer. From this you will have a better idea of the employers perceptive, what is it they are looking for in an employee? What skills and qualities does the employer value above others? – You can find lot’s of clues in the job advertisement and on the company website. If you truly understand what the employer is looking for on a CV, and you posses the employers essential criteria, you will secure job interviews from every CV application, every time!

We hope this article helps you create a positive CV, if you need any support Employment King Offers a CV Writing Service and a Down-loadable CV Template Package for your use. Finally Good luck with both your job hunting and future career.

Employer Requirements

Imagine you want to take your partner out for a romantic meal, you have chosen two restaurants and can’t decide between them both, you look at the pictures on the website, one of the images shows a romantic scene of a couple looking lovingly at each other while drinking a glass of wine, the second image is of some expensive looking fine dining, the pictures of the food making your mouth water, they both look amazing, so which one would you choose?

It’s a hard choice, 50% would of choose the romantic meal as you wanted a romantic night out, the other 50% would choose the mouth watering food, as the taste of food is important.

As you will agree, depending on your theme (or what you feel is more important) directs your choice. The same principle happens when employers look at your CV.

Remember employers receive around 300 CVs for every advertised job, they initially spend around 30 seconds skimming through the CV and you need your CV to stand out.

CV Image

As when you chose the restaurant, you had an idea of what you wanted – your requirements, the employer has their own requirements for a new employee (often recorded as the job specification). Some employers are looking for a professional; does your CV represent a professional image? Other employers require some who is creative; to gain an interview here you will need a creative looking CV.

As you will agree, the image of your CV is highly important as this is the first document the employer will see and your CV is the employer’s window to who you are and what you represent. As expert CV designers we have the experience to design you a CV relevant to your career and job sector.

Remember content is king, your CV has to look good visually and needs to stand out from the crowd and I would add that your CV has to sell your skills, qualities and experiences the employer is looking for; do you know what your future employer is looking for on your CV? Often people fail to land job interviews as they don’t understand what the employer wants recording on the CV.
